Portable Electronic Book?

IMAGINE cramming 113 books into your carry-on holiday luggage.

It's a task that is not only impractical, but one likely to upset your fellow travellers.

That is unless you take the hi-tech option and cram those weighty tomes on to a lightweight e-book reader.

These slim and sophisticated gadgets can store text from thousands of books in the same space as a novella, and boast a screen that looks like paper.

But electronic books are not confined to these innovative gadgets. Computer screens and even iPhones are being turned into e-book readers, making an old technology new again.

And, according to market analysts and e-book sellers, the trend is picking up steam.

Leading technology analyst Mark Mahaney, from Citibank, recently dubbed Amazon's Kindle e-book reader "the iPod of the book world", predicting Amazon would sell more than 378,000 of the gadgets by the end of the year – double his original prediction.

Sony also is poised to launch its latest Portable Reader System outside America next month, and Lexcycle this month launched Stanza, an e-book application for the iPhone and iPod Touch that gives users free access to classic novels such as Great Expectations.
